Hong Kong based brand i-am-chen has been announced as Fashion Scout’s Merit Award winner for the SS19 season. With former winners of the award including Eudon Choi, Phoebe English and David Koma, designer ZHI Chen – the brilliance behind the i-am-chen brand – is in stellar company. We covered i-am-chen’s AW18 show on the Ones to Watch catwalk and were instantly enamored of the bold colours and fluffiest of knits.
Judges, including Ida Petersson – Womenswear Buying Director at Browns – and Fashion Scout’s own Martyn Roberts – selected i-am-chen thanks to the label’s spirited, colourful aesthetic and the innovative nature of its knits. This is a designer constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be done with your average knitting machine and challenging the traditional definition of knitting with cutting edge techniques and unconventional yarns. The result is style inspired by artists such as Alexander Calder and David Hockney that is unique and eye-catching, the perfect antidote to the overly serious and solemn side of the industry.
There are only a limited number of options for new designers to accelerate a career – and winning the Merit Award is one of them. The accolade comes with a fully sponsored catwalk show with Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week with space to host press and buyers, plus financial support. The Merit Award winning show takes place on Friday 14th September at 1pm as part of Fashion Scout’s London Fashion Week schedule.
