Dripping with a distinctive design decadence, Zeynep Kartal’s AW18 collection set the runway alight at London Fashion Week. ‘Nouveau’ was a high voltage collection celebrating 60’s lavish glamour, with leanings towards Art Deco luxe.
With a definite nod to iconic women from the vintage era, Kartal delivered a new take on some old classics with lashings of modern detailing on timeless silhouettes. This Turkish born, Manchester based, designer stayed true to her signature style by bringing a combination of drama and romance to the runway.
Indulgent draping, delicate embellishment and effortless elegance gave every piece stature, demonstrating why her gowns have been worn by celebrities including Lady Gaga. Deep claret red, dark midnight blue, matte gold and opulent burnt orange proved a dreamy seasonal palette. One shoulder dresses, sheer ruffled necks, oversized pussy bows, and chiffon swept over nipped in waists gave the collection both unity and uniqueness.
Kartal’s designs possess a sense of female empowerment, an owning of a look, underlaid by subtler femininity. Oversized velvet trouser suits were softened with sash belts and satin lapels, sharp shouldered jumpsuits were lightened with plunging necklines. Feather trimmed wide leg jumpsuits, spotted sheer lace, belted tailored jackets and floor length volume showcased Kartal’s immaculate use of couture techniques.
Using fine fabrics, including silk, handmade lace and plush velvets, the emphasis was heavily on grace and glamour. A sequined gold jumpsuit stood apart as a sell out item and the audience whooped at the added treat of Turkish superstar Ajda Pekkan appearing on the runway in a floor skimming star encrusted show stopper. Neutral glossy make up and simple centre parted hair allowed the clothes to speak for themselves. A defiantly dazzling show.
