Show report: Ones to Watch Fashion Scout AW16, London Fashion Week
ONES TO WATCH AW16 showcased Fengyi Tan, Edda, and a collaboration from Dian Pelangi x Nelly Rose x Odette Steele.
FENGYI TAN opened the show with dramatic, textural cobalt blue, black and metallic pieces that were peppered with detail. Velvet, PVC and ribbed fabrics formed high necks, geometric shapes and fearless slits on figure hugging looks.
Norwegian designer EDDA Gimnes followed with her paper doll collection, inspired by a historic archive she compiled herself sourced from photos found at boot sales. “It’s all very raw and uncontaminated,” she told us. Oversized monochrome pieces were adorned with sketches created using her non-dominant drawing hand – “sometimes I closed my eyes to make the drawing more naïve and give it a more playful aesthetic.”
DIAN PELANGI x NELLY ROSE x ODETTE STEELE presented ‘Co-Identity,’ bringing a collection to London from Jakarta Fashion Week that was designed to combined traditional Indonesian techniques and contemporary London style. “The inspiration for our collection was the coming together of us designers,” Odette Steele told us, highlighting the British, Indonesian and Zambian influences – as well as the prints and embroidery signature to each designer – that combined to create Co-Identity. On the catwalk, necks were high, hemlines were long and headpieces were key detail in this bright collection.
