Clio Peppiatt is a designer with a fiercely feminine and magically unconventional aesthetic of huge depth. Her collections manage to balance a multitude of different elements, from the macabre, to the fun and frothy and somehow feel coherent and whole.
SS18 was inspired by the film ‘The Love Witch,’ directed by Anna Biller. Although released in 2017 the vintage tones and composition in the film are beautifully colourful, skillfully styled and doused with just the right amount of gothic horror. Which might also be said of the collection inspired by it.
Astrological prints and layers of ruffled pink satin sat alongside boudoir sheers in fuchsia and scarlet for Clio Peppiatt SS18. Elegant midnight blue, metallics and smooth, silky black contrasted against opaque, rushed white.
Observing the collection meant delving into a rich range of imagery and iconography, from tarot cards through to the devil, angels, Adam and Eve - and all the while a harpist played in the background inside a circlet of blood red flowers.
We loved the hand drawn illustrations and the rich mix of textures, from intricate embroidery, to beading and the moc croc of the electric blue jacket with its embracing skeletons. Empire described The Love Witch as “A touch languid, it’s also mesmerising, provocative, unsettling and sensual” – a perfect description for Clio Peppiatt SS18 too.
