SS14 Trend: Pool Slides

It's official: this season, flats are the new heels. For SS14, sartorial sights have been firmly locked and loaded on the slip on sandals known as 'pool slides.' Whilst, historically, this shoe may have attracted considerable eye rolling from those who had written it off as dreaded 90s garb that should never resurface, for 2014 that is no longer the case.
The pool slide may be practical and comfortable but scrap that stereotypical image of a balding British man wearing sandals and socks, as thanks to the input of someone of the fashion world’s best brains, this shoe is set to be the hottest commodity of the season. With designers such as JW Anderson, Jonathan Saunders, Chloe, Kenzo, Isabel Marant, The Row, Prada and Celine parading pool slides on their SS14 catwalks, it is a trend you might find you just can’t resist.
If you’re a minimalist then emulate JW Anderson's sleek concept by opting for a plain black or white pair of pool slides. If you need detail, simple architectural folds are all that is required. Team with striking monochrome and adventurous silhouettes for a look more than worthy of an Anderson catwalk.

Kenzo's mouthwatering SS14 show was themed around water, and debuted a series of aqua patterned mini dresses, an abundance of blue shades, flowing silhouettes and wave-cut hemlines, all of which are the perfect compliment for the pool side. Their h20 inspired prints were teamed with perfectly matched flats in vibrant hues from electric blue to hot pink.

If you just can’t abide practical without at least a splash of glamour then Chloe’s sculptured gold and neoprene pool slides bring plenty to the table. Alternatively, why not double up your SS14 trends and add a bomber jacket and some wide legged trousers, aping the look seen on the Jonathan Saunders SS14 catwalk? If none of these tickle your fancy there’s still plenty of choice – crossover at Isabel Marant, floral camo at Givenchy or retro value with the original Adidas sporty slide.

The pool slide is set to revolutionise our shoe shelves this summer; the sleek aesthetic lends itself to a myriad of styles and trends and the cool girl vibe allows it to cross the fashion spectrum. Plus, the foot-friendly comfort factor is likely to make it everyone’s secret favourite trend.
