Pump Up The Volume - The AW 12 Oversized Trend
We’re just going to come out and say it, even though Anna Dello Russo will disagree: fashion need not be uncomfortable. There, doesn’t that feel good? Like Victorian women’s lungs after loosening their corsets; or your circulatory system after wrestling off a pair of boa-constrictor-tight skinny jeans. Sometimes comfort can equal style and that's why we’re celebrating one of this season’s biggest (really) trends: Oversized.
Many designers pumped up the volume in their AW12 collections, giving us ballooning dimensions in all their silhouettes (for a masterclass in this season’s voluminous shapes see Comme des Garcons’ selection of Oversize skirts, coats, suits and dresses). The trend is especially strong in outwear, which is coming in cocoon shapes and roomy mannish cuts, giant lapels included. Good news then for bundling up in lots of woolly jumpers this winter (the day woolly jumpers go out of style is the day Karl Lagerfeld takes off his sunglasses).
Elsewhere you’ll see the Oversize treatment in banana-like sleeves, billowing skirts, wide-leg and harem trousers, dropped waists, shoulders and even grande jewellery, hats and scarves. Lengths are long, from below the knee to sweeping the floor. It’s advisable to balance the billow with a more slim-cut item – close cut jeans under an Oversize coat, curve skimming tops with Oversized trousers - unless you’re The Blogger of course, in which case you might well volumise from top to toe…
