Oh Chanel how do we love thee? Let us count the ways…over the knee latex and patent leather, furry pink and blue helmets, tweed waders, architectural collars, pleated skater skirts – edgy and current and yet totally classic. Karl Lagerfeld’s show was like a swear word uttered from an elegant pout.  For AW13 the theme was very much ‘around the world’ (reinforced by a huge globe and Daft’s Punk’s ‘Around The World’ piped into the venue, just in case you’d missed the reference) and Lagerfeld’s fearless, fashion forward globetrotters looked pretty much prepared for everything. Mildly oversize greatcoats and jackets were autumn ready, with Lagerfeld playing with the front lines – introducing a convenient cut out to enable walking in those thigh high boots and folded back corners creating pockets and hem detail.  Shoulders were rounded, collars were high and hemlines short as the collection progressed through layers of texture – leather, feather, patent, boucle, chunky knit.

What we loved most were those boots – plain biker or equestrian to start but soon moving into fantasy territory to match the rest of the texture adventure in boucle or tweed, buckled, chained, pointed and loafer-ed.  We wonder if Coco ever envisaged her signature boucle enrobing a thigh…Totally mad.  Totally covetable.  And then there were les sacs à main – lots of chain straps, decadently oversize giant clutches, the reappearance of a Lego block, adventures in texture and one globe shaped beauty that encapsulated the theme of the collection in a single sphere.

Best of all about Chanel AW13 was that every piece was street-ready – ok some might take more gumption than others - and yet there was nothing ordinary about any of the looks.  That’s why we continue to worship at the altar of KARL here at the Glass Pineapple because, whilst he always manages to hit the sartorial nail on the head, he doesn't compromise to get there and he darn well doesn’t give a figue what anyone else thinks.
