Alexander McQueen AW13

Posted on

‘Wearability’ is the kind of buzz word you can just throw out of the window when it comes to Alexander McQueen – following on from SS13’s bee theme came an AW13 collection that was awash with crinoline, corsets and the most marvelous bejeweled face cages. There was more than a touch of Queenie to the Elizabethan ruffs, corsets and exaggerated sleeves, with wench-like off the shoulder necklines and overstated hips under full skirts very much in keeping with going the ‘back to womanhood’ that Sarah Burton spoke of last season.

Swathes of regimented pearls and Burton’s signature intricate beading were reminiscent of decadent armour, an effect that was reinforced by giant epaulettes, chain mail tights and thickly embellished bodices with metal cinch belts.  Marabou fluff on coats and shoes, densely spiked leather boots, metal plates and soft broad accordion pleats maintained the awe-inspiring attention to detail and sense of drama that left us wishing for the days when crinolines came as standard.  Never before has a face cage seemed so appealing.
