CFDA Award Nominees for 2013 – Who rose to the top of New York’s style pile

Posted on

New York’s edge is as sharp as it comes. With President Diane von Furstenberg at the helm of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and previous winners including Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen for the Row, Reed Krakoff and Joseph Altuzarra, 2013’s nominees have their work cut out for them.

The Womenswear Designer of the Year Award is the ultimate prize up for grabs. Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, and Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler will vie for the annual honour. Here’s a reminder of how they ended up in the top slots.

Alexander Wang

Wang’s cool downtown appeal mesmerised us from the first slouchy t-shirt and rumpled leather vest combo. His collections, with their off-duty model manner are the bridge between hip and high-end, giving us all a touch of Lower East Side sensibility. The newly appointed Creative Director of Balenciaga has come a long way but never strayed from making ‘real’ clothes.

His AW13 offering was true to his signature style - poignant but pared-down. Lustrous dark leathers in black and amber were injected between city-slick charcoal, jet and navy. A-line skirts, cocooning coats and pleated harem-style pants shaped up nicely next to cut-out tunics, oversized jumpers and razor sharp pleating. As always, construction was king, with a nip here and a tuck there making the ordinary extraordinary.

Marc Jacobs

What more can be said about the man and the label that consistently make best in show during the Big Apple’s biggest week. No stranger to CFDA accolades, Jacobs’ casual meets classic meets grungy meets girly combinations are simple and relatable while maintaining an air of ‘How does he do it?’ AW13 used shine and high-society accents to create an easy glamour – meticulously made pieces thrown together with upper class ease.

A slouchy cable knit was shown with a full fox fur scarf (there was little reason to wear pants as well), a pinstriped skirt suit exposed the bare chest underneath, high-waisted short shorts were paired with a buttoned-up shirt. Jewel-tone furs, silk shirt dresses and a sequined culotte suit went all out with extravagant ‘20’s style, ending the show in Jacobs’ own brand of ladylike irony.

Proenza Schouler

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are the dynamic designer duo behind Proenza Schouler. Using their mother’s maiden names to create a brand that is as feminine and fanciful as it is tailored and sophisticated, the pair have struck It-girl gold by deconstructing high-end basics and adding a futuristic spin.

Also past winners of CFDA awards, their AW13 collection in monochrome had mod musings. Sharp shapes, dropped shoulders and cocoon contours, shift dresses and oversized covered buttons were stark, severe and Sixties-inspired. Texture took the look back to the future with contemporary degradé, laser-cut leather, chain mail overlays and matte ostrich skin.

Winners of the 2013 CFDA awards will be announced on the 3rd of June.
