The reign of the bomber jacket shows no sign of coming to an end, as this season the iconic former flight apparel celebrates its strongest comeback to date. This nostalgic piece of outerwear seemed to appear on almost every catwalk for SS13, making it a must have for spring (when it finally arrives…). The classic silhouette has been reinvented in countless ways this season, from oversized sportswear inspired versions, to form fitting feminine floral prints and a vast variety of textures, from mesh to metallic.

Of all the designers who returned the bomber jacket to its sporting roots, Stella McCartney was undoubtedly the champion of the casual bomber this season. The lightweight material and oversized silhouettes were typical of McCartney's sportswear inspired aesthetic, which also featured sheer panelling and simple colour blocking to create a fresh, relaxed and youthful feel.

The sports luxe trend sees the bomber jacket return to its classic athletic style, which typically features an elasticated waist and cuffed neck and sleeves. The Aviù cotton and leather bomber has a sportswear inspired striped collar, rounded neckline and mesh panelling, whilst Chloé's silk Habotai bomber jacket creates is instant luxe with its slick cobra print and drawstring hemline.

Feminine and Floral

The catwalk has also seen the bomber jacket updated with a much softer look, incorporating feminine detailing and an ice-cream inspired colour palette. Mulberry completely reinvented the style with delicate floral prints on blouson silk for a polished and romantic spring look.

A flirty and feminine style of bomber jacket is the perfect way to welcome spring. Band of Outsiders Pink Lady á la Grease satin twill bomber jacket stays true to the classic bomber style with ribbed knit jersey trims on the sleeves and waist. Basso & Vintage Brooke's printed silk bomber creates an elegant silhouette with funnel neck and cinched waist.

Statement Prints

The catwalk wouldn't be complete without a collection of statement jackets and the bomber is no exception. In a non-referential collection, inspired by ‘Disco and Shine,’ Jonathan Saunders debuted a series of eye catching bombers. These included a relaxed fit iridescent silver number and an exotic printed version, with fish scale texture in a contrasting subtle black colour, demonstrating that there is more to the statement jacket than a bright print.

The statement bomber jacket is the perfect way to put some oomph back into your outfit and there is no shortage of eye-catching designs to choose from. Minimarket's blue lotus print design applies a modern twist to a classic bomber style, whilst Emma Cook uses the classic bomber shape as a blank canvas for her eclectic "serpent and stripe" pattern, a unique take on the graphic print trend.
