The Pre Autumn/Winter collections are the amuse bouche to the main season courses, a tantalising taste of what the SS and AW collections are going to bring. They are insight into the coming season’s trends and also a welcome solution to that most awkward of fashion periods – the ‘trans’ season. Although we’re really only just entering SS13 territory, we’ve already been looking ahead to the pre-AW13 trends and have picked some of our favourites:
Masculinity and the Cigarette Pants
This trend is all about fabulous tailoring and androgynous lines. A crisp cotton shirt, those signature cigarette pants or black boyfriend blazer smooth the transition from summer to winter. Quality is key with this trend - invest in items that will go the distance, both this year and in years to come. You can either go all out masculine (think monochrome, muted makeup) or add a pop of femininity and colour. We say look to Moschino Cheap and Chic for inspiration on how to achieve the perfect balance.

Capes, but not as you know them
Capes were everywhere this Pre Autumn/Winter, but with less formal elegance and more daytime wearability, easing the transition from summer to autumn. However, these capes avoided typical cape-like features such as furs and velvets, but instead trod a subtler line with fabrics such as wool and leather. Many designers experimented with the morphing of coats into capes, the boundaries between the two becoming much more difficult to spot, such as these Celine and Acne Studio’s Pre Autumn/Winter looks.

Karl Lagerfeld led what was something of a Scottish revolution in the pre-collections, with tartan and tweed bursting from the runways of Chanel, Valentino, Gucci and McQ Alexander McQueen. From Scottish heritage to punk chic, the common thread was ease of wear; anyone can slip on a tartan shirt or accessorise with a plaid scarf to update a look, or you can take it to the extreme with head to toe plaid.

Key Accessories – Socks
Socks were ubiquitous this Pre Autumn/Winter, paired with boots, heels and flats. They might well be the simplest way to bring a look up to date – plus they keep ankles toasty when temperatures start to drop. Make like Carven and nail two trends in one with socks in this season’s signature colour (versions of greys, charcoals and ‘almost blacks’).

Pre AW13 saw leather continue its domination of fashionland, with Celine, Givenchy, and Bottega Veneta notably keen to incorporate it in a myriad of different ways. There were leather t-shirts, trousers, coats, shoes, gloves and dresses, with a smattering of PVC, but colours were more subdued, in grown up neutrals. Styles ranged from masculine structures to feminine peplums emphasising the waist.

Ultra Vibrant Florals
A sharp contrast from the masculine collections showcased by designers such as Balenciaga, Max Mara and Richard Nicoll, others looked to adapt the traditional summer dress into something a little bolder, edgier and in your face. Slightly more sophisticated than the ‘first love’ spring palette, these pieces were saturated with colour and hugely attention seeking: keep accessories to a minimum so as not to overdo it.
