The Best of Cannes 2013

Posted on

If Hollywood starlets, esteemed directors, models and musicians have seemed rather thin on the ground recently, that’s because they’ve all been living it up on the French Riviera for the Cannes Film Festival. Cannes has always been the epitome of early summer glitz, glamour and decadence and this year certainly wasn’t short of Cristal, diamonds and yachts. Even the headline films seemed to ooze opulence, from extravagant chart topper The Great Gatsby that kicked off the opening Gala, to Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, which opened Un Certain Regard. Naturally, the Cannes red carpet was also the chance to indulge in a dazzling display of gorgeous gowns...

Best Dressed

If there was a Best Dressed statuette we think it surely belongs to Cannes Juror Nicole Kidman. Consistently elegant and refined, groomed and glamorous in a flurry of luxe embellishments and classic silhouettes, Nicole seemed to take inspiration from her latest role as Grace Kelly in her elegant frock choices.

There was the white custom-made Giorgio Armani with its Swarovski crystal bow across the bodice; a strapless gown by favourite Kidman designer L'Wren Scott, in an exotic red and blue leaf pattern; a glamorous Valentino Couture SS13 ivory affair (rumoured to have been Anne Hathaway's Oscar dress before she opted for the pink Prada column); and the vintage-esque Dior Couture strapless dress with its intricate floral and leaf embroidery and a delicate nipped waist.

Red Carpet Trend

Minimalism was one of the major trends sashaying its way down the red carpet, as stars aplenty opted for a palette of monochrome, simple silhouettes and clean lines.

Zoe Saldana worked an asymmetric top with draped sleeves and polka dot skirt, both by Emanuel Ungaro, with a pop of colour courtesy of a pair of vibrant tangerine Oscar Tiye heels. Carey Mulligan’s black and white art-deco inspired AW13 Vionnet dress cemented her status as ‘girl of the moment,’ whilst Emma Watson chose a white Chanel Couture dress with a black sequin bodice. Cara Delevingne looked every inch the Hollywood Siren at the Great Gatsby premiere, in a gothic silk and lace column dress by Burberry, with an almost waist deep plunging neckline.

Best Red Carpet Dress

With a myriad of beautiful dresses to choose from, it’s virtually impossible to pick just one, but not just any dress can be a ‘best red carpet dress’ you know...

In possibly the sultriest look of the 2013 Cannes red carpet, Douzten Kroes pulled an Angelina in a pink Atelier Versace gown with a super thigh-high slit. Then there was Isla Fisher's punchy scarlet tiered Oscar de la Renta gown, Jessica Chastain’s purple beaded custom-made Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, and finally Carey Mulligan's chic pink Dior Couture dress, reminiscent of that Ralph Lauren princess gown Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 1999 Oscars. And finally, the unnamed lady who surely takes the Best Red Carpet Dress crown for turning up to the Cannes Film Festival in a dress made of biscuit trays.
