The summer of 2012 was alive with sports enthusiasm thanks to the huge spectacle that was Olympics, and as Wimbledon is starting to get us reaching for a racquet once again we think it’s the perfect time to sneak a look at the influence of some of the sport-heavy spring/summer 2013 collections.
Mesh panelling, a monochromatic colour palette, clean lines and draped, textured silhouettes are the defining ethos behind the sportswear aesthetic that tempts everyone from up and coming to renowned designers, Alexander Wang to Preen. Embracing the spirit of athleticism with a contemporary sportswear silhouette this summer creates an effortless, on-trend look that expresses this new-found sporting era.

DKNY’s 2014 resort collection reflects the precision and experimentation of future sportswear, with an effortless balance of femininity and androgyny. Key pieces saw sweatshirts, bomber jackets, skirts and tailored joggers adorned in mesh, lace and sequins lending a luxe feel to an otherwise laidback style of apparel. With monochromatic hues and flashes of cobalt blue, lime and purple, it was a revolutionary take on the sportswear look.

An abundance of feminine sportswear shapes balanced with a contemporary colour palette of luminous coral, jade green, neon accents and high-shine metallics were seen at the Milly by Michelle Smith SS13 ready-to-wear collection. Graphic kaleidoscopic prints took over tailored designs producing an end result that was perfect for those looking for a sophisticated aesthetic with a sportswear edge.

Up and coming Melbourne based brand ‘Elliott Label’ offered a collection made up of sporty leather pieces, trans-seasonal separates and a theme of casual cool. Founded by Kylie Gulliver, Elliott Label mixes the soul of laidback Melbourne with style conscious New York, a winning combination when it comes to nailing that refreshing summer-time sporty essence.
For an instant Wimbledon themed wardrobe update, without going so far as actual tennis whites, a dropped-waist dress or an umpire-style jacket, a pleated skirt or loosely tailored shorts hit exactly the right style notes. We would, however, suggest that you stay away from the novelty tennis racquet earrings…
