V&A Fashion In Motion - Jenny Packham

Posted on

Being able to produce clothes that make women feel fabulous, that attract celebrity clients from A-Z (including royalty) as well as being one of the UK’s most successful and independent fashion brands with global recognition spanning over the last twenty-five years is no mean feat. But Jenny Packham just makes it look easy.

Among other things, the designers’ distinctive signature has revolutionised the bridal industry, introducing a contemporary approach to design and styling since she launched her eponymous label in 1998. Flagship stores and showrooms in London, Paris and New York display her captivating collections of RTW, resort, bridal, accessories and lingerie, a vein of elegant luxury and fine embellishment running through the centre of each.

For Fall 13, willowing washed out pastels and muted jewel tones were staple elements of the collection. Broad reaching formalwear, a line of relaxed gowns and a few separates that were inspired by seventeenth-century Paris salons and "Strong-minded women [who] met to discuss arts and culture.” We loved the red tea-length dress with sheer layers, beaded in the style of Dorothy’s ruby slippers. A dusty peach organza crop top, covered in red and white floral-patterned beading with cherry-colored high-waist trousers also made it onto our wish list. But what about simpler, less glamorous daytime pieces? "Other people do day better," according to the designer.

Synonymous with luxurious quality, resolute craftsmanship and eminently glamorous design, Jenny Packham has become the design house of choice for many a red carpet event. The desirability of her designs attracts a cross section of celebs, from the vintage vampiness of Dita Von Teese, to the California girl charm of Jennifer Aniston. She also worked regularly with stylist Patricia Field to dress Kim Catrall’s character in Sex And The City and has guest judged on shows like Project Runway (All Stars).

On the 19th July, the V&A Museum is paying homage to these incredible career achievements with a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Packham’s fashion empire. The event is part of the museum’s Fashion in Motion exhibition, and will include a live catwalk including some of Packham’s most iconic designs. If you don’t have tickets for the event then you can stream it live from the V&A’s Facebook page – it’s a chance to experience a little slice of fashion history.
