New York Fashion Week: Rebecca Taylor SS14

Rebecca Taylor proved that opposites really do attract with her sporty enthused yet romantic SS14 collection. Combining the perfect balance of biker-esque details with her usual lashings of femininity, she introduced a new-found edge to her designs.

Perforated leathers adorned padded trousers, mini-dresses and bomber jackets whereas soft chiffon tees were presented in an array of subtle pastel shades, from lemon to pale blue, and were given a tough edge paired with leather shorts and trousers with peek-a-boo sheer inserts and relaxed boxy fits.

The sweatpant was also reinterpreted in a relaxed yet tailored style and paired beautifully against contemporary, cool floral prints, which were ditsy, oversized, and juxtaposed with sporty shapes and aesthetics. Crisp whites provided the perfect canvas for the stunning sugary pink and cobalt blooms on display. With floral prints being the ultimate representation of spring/summer, Rebecca Taylor added a sense of biker-chick to ladylike florals via blends of mesh detailing, sheer panels and luxe leather.

Taylor also proved to her fash-pack audience she knew a thing or two about layering with a dose of inspiration for those who struggle to nail the trend for the warmer months: combine light fabrics and subtle hues and include a tailored outerwear option to keep the look polished and sleek.

For the up-and-coming season, we say be inventive and step away from a wholly ladylike or edgy ensemble, mix and match an essence of each to unite an unlikely duo – feminine and sports-luxe combined. Take a leaf out of Taylor’s book and harmonise motor-cycle chic and ladylike elegance, with croc embossed leather, rubberized vests and enchanted, kaleidoscopic florals. Roll on springtime 2014…
