New York Fashion Week: Zimmerman SS14

Zimmermann hosted their first ever Fashion Week show in New York this year and at The Glass Pineapple, frankly we thought the Australian label created by sisters Nicky and Simone played a blinder. Strong lines, delicate prints and a fusing together of a masculine silhouette with feminine detail provided the basis for a SS14 collection inspired by ‘carnivals.’ Thankfully the design duo steered clear of any stereotypical circus themes, tacky fabrics and bad colour combinations and instead presented a sophisticated collection that still had plenty of shine.

Flirty cocktail dresses sashayed down the runway with pretty pleats and peek-a-boo detail, followed by moulded to the body swimsuits and floaty summer dresses awash with sheer layers and lovable ruffles. Skirts were gravity defying - like carnival floats or circus tents – and several swimwear pieces bore underwire twisted like the body of a contortionist. The range of fabrics was impressive - coloured leather, metallics, oversized crystals, metal chokers, sheer, silk and mesh combining to achieve edgy with a touch of feminine class. Colour-wise delicate prints and colours managed to achieve peace amongst the ‘controlled chaos’ theme and shades were often taken from the nude palette with touches of gold, silver, honeycomb black lace and rose gold detailing.

Much of Zimmerman’s appeal lies in their swimsuits and an ability to create one-pieces and bikini separates that suit multiple body types, as well as following seasonal trends. In fact, if these girls have anything to do with it, the swimsuit might become something of a wardrobe staple for SS14, and not just for the beach.  Which is lucky for those of us who are a million miles form Bondi…
