New Year's Eve Fashion - Follow The Style Icons
New Year's Eve is imminent and if you're suffering the usual uninspired outfit choices then what could be more of a dead cert in the style stakes than stealing the look of a fashion icon. We're not talking dress up here, just inspiration - no need to go full Klum.
We think there’s no better tribute to the woman who evolved from slave princess to champion of sass and mental health pioneer than to replicate some of her best looks. We're not suggesting Chelsea buns on your ears or a gold bikini but the subtler Halston-esque style that Carrie rocked at Studio 54.
You may or may not know this but Katherine Hamnett was the queen of the statement tee. Yes, she started it all, and is therefore responsible for everything, from You Can’t Sit With Us, to Shirt Happens. Given the upheaval of 2016 events, the passing of the year seems like the perfect time to wear your opinions on your chest. What do you love? What makes you spit? Or what makes you look really cool and clever.
Androgynous tailoring + the moody eye + epic accessories a fabulous NYE outfit do make. Maybe best of all Jett was almost 100% seen in trainers so you don't have to tackle the blistered heels and bunions that a New Years night out in vertiginous heels will inflict. You could even go all out with the feathered haircut, which will also keep your ears warm.
You may not be blessed with the height, willowy limbs and cut glass cheekbones of the Somali model but that doesn't mean you can't copy her elegant, fashion forward style. Bold colours, Amazonian silhouettes and big, statement accessories should do it - plus a great big dose of confidence to carry the whole thing off.
Want to be the mysterious one in the corner that everyone wants to write poetry about and croon passages of On The Road to through a haze of Gauloises? Then it's time to go big on black. High waisted black tailored pants, a tight as hell sweater and an artfully tied scarf combined with lashings of eyeliner. Note: vaping is a no no with this look.
American debutante/socialite, heiress and philanthropist Barbara Hutton was obsessed with jewellery. And if you can be bothered to do nothing more for NYE than throw on a statement gem then she's your perfect inspiration. Faberge, Cartier and one of Marie Antoinette's necklaces were just a few pieces from the collection she owned. Even if you don't have the $$$ to buy at that level costume jewellery does the job just as well. As well as jewellery, Hutton was famous for husbands - she had 7, one of whom was Carey Grant. #goals
If you're the one at the party who likes all eyes on you Kate Bush is your girl for serious style inspo. Big hair, khol'd eyes, a serious pout are all necessary (visible nipples optional). Choose from a shiny metallic unitard, bikini with thigh holster and cape or anything by Fong Leng, as above. Be sure to get up and belt out Wuthering Heights at full volume when midnight strikes so that people know what your vibe is.
